Woman injured in paintball gun bar stunt 01 Mar 2005 A Motueka woman shot 78 times at close range with a paintball gun in a bar competition suffered a suspected broken hand, severe bruising and large welts. Lizzie Himiona, 22, was still feeling dazed and in pain on Saturday afternoon after taking part in the Fear Factor paintball challenge the previous night at Nelson's Taylors Bar and Night Club. Police investigating the incident have spoken to bar staff and viewed security camera footage of the incident, but said they were still deciding whether to lay charges. Miss Himiona, who came third in the competition, was taken by St John Ambulance to Nelson Hospital a short time after the incident and treated for a hand injury, skin loss and serious bruising and swelling. A dancer at Visions Revue Bar who will be unable to work for several weeks, Miss Himiona said she had already been drinking when she entered Taylors Bar just after 10pm on Friday. She said she was approached by bar staff shortly after arriving and invited to take part in the Fear Factor competition. She agreed and was asked to sign a waiver of legal responsibility. Miss Himiona said she took part in two initial challenges , and was was then given a helmet with a visor and an army style jacket to wear before stepping on to a stage. She said two bar employees began firing at her torso and arms with paintball guns, from three or four metres away. "I actually went into shock as soon as the first three hit me and I just couldn't move. "I just can't remember much after that they were coming really fast. All I know is they stopped firing and they said `78 hits'." Miss Himiona said the crowd seemed impressed by her efforts until she removed her jacket to reveal large welts on her torso and arms and a rapidly swelling wrist. A woman applied ice to her injuries while the next competitors took the stage. AdvertisementAdvertisementShe left the bar just before midnight and returned to Visions where a worried staff member alerted police and called for an ambulance. "They were shocked. I was bawling my eyes out because of the pain. The police were saying that it shouldn't have happened." Miss Himiona accepted some responsibility for taking part in the competition, but was angry someone could receive such severe injuries from a Friday night bar stunt. Taylors Bar management did not respond to requests from the Nelson Mail for comment. Update: (Posted by Tockly) Have recieved info from a police source here in Nelson. He said the following: The bar had a video camera as all bars do! after the shooting she was waving her arms and happy as a bird in a tree! The staff were shooting from 7m she was wearing protection! No others were injured in the event. So they are 100% sure the paintball gun did not do this. So media or video who lies ah!!!!!!!!!!!!!not video. As she was a stripper she had marks from the paintball gun. on her and was meant to work that night so the owner of stripe club was @#%$ off so she got roughed up buy the strip club, that is were the wrist damage etc came from! so guys don,t stress about this the media always stretches it out you should all know that. if i here more will let you know! As you are all by now aware there have been several resignations from the NZPPA Executive Committee in the past 48 hours. These include Rob, Wayne, Skinny, Ryan, Grant and myself for a variety of reasons. Under the registered association rules a quorum of 5 members is required to hold any official meeting, appoint any new member to the executive (into one of the 6 casual vacancies) or make any decisions. Effectively the NZPPA Executive can not do anything at this point in time with the remaining two people in place. With this in mind a special general meeting is being called for the following purposes: This special general meeting will be held at the Easter Weekend tournament in Wellington - as this is the next major gathering of paintball participants. The exact time/day will be confirmed over the next couple of days once a suitable time can be discussed with the team at TAG Paintball. All paintballers (players/field ops/members/non-members/importers/etc) are strongly advised and requested to attend and discuss the issues at hand. In view of the disparate views of what the association is here to achieve we are also polling ALL PAINTBALLERS to think about what it is that the association should be there for, the top 5 goals that the association should be working on, the pros/cons of the association and some of the positive/negative things that the association have done in the past. This is a blue-sky thing … and all emails should be structured in a logical manner and emailed to info@paintball.org.nz as soon as possible. This is the last chance … and an opportunity for people to come together with a common goal. If people choose not to attend – then so bit it, but it will probably illustrate clearly the future for the NZPPA and more importantly paintball in New Zealand. An email outlining the above will also be sent out to all NZPPA members in the next 24 hours. If you are planning on attending the special general meeting it would be fantastic that when you email your feedback in you also confirm in the note. Forum Discussion Topic NZPPA Mass Resignations 25 Jan 2005 For the most part citing unwillingness to work in the face of constant negative opinion voiced by a vocal minority, 7 out of the 8 NZPPA committee members have resigned, leaving the NZPPA leadership in disarray. The show appears to have been met with wide approval from the NZ Paintball Community. http://www.sportscafe.co.nz/ Discussion Topic NZ Team Attending Malaysian Tournament 14 Nov 2004 New Zealand based paintball team "Team Kiwi" would like to announce its attendance at the 2004 Nations Cup hosted at Xtion paintball in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia this Decemeber. This is the first time a team has represented New Zealand at an Asian paintball tournament and according to some members of the team "will not be the last". Full News Article Roto 2004 last Roto stadium event? 31 Oct 2004 Event co-organiser Peter Mumby has stated that Roto 2004 was the last time he and Brendon Charles would be hosting the event. Roto 2004 was the fourth in the Rotorua International Stadium series. He also stated that he and Brendon would not be running a follow up to 2004's Hamilton event either. This has apparently been decided in no small part due to negative reaction from what is widely considered to be a vocal minority of paintballers. Saints Breakup? 14 Aug 2004 Team Saints, 13yr veterans of NZ Paintball, are at a stage where they are considering breaking up the team and moving on. Team captain, Rik Goldsworth, has said that this is due to a number of reasons. First among these is a shortage of players, coupled with a player base that is spread around the country. Rik also says that he would rather the team went out on a high note than try to drag on, dropping lower and lower in tournament standings until it peters out. Team Saints will almost certainly be attending Rotorua this year as what could be their last tournament. The individual players will not leave the sport. More news as it arrives. In all, it was a good clip about tournament paintball that managed to show mainly good things about the sport. Interviewed were Chris and Simon from Raiderz, and Rob Blitz, one of the organisers of the event. The fact that the clip was played right at the end of the SPORTZAH show tells us that we're still a fringe sport, but this was one of those times where you could actually watch a bit of 'ball on TV without cringing. Go Saints! Aussie Import Law Relaxes 05 Mar 2004 Very soon, it seems that New Zealand players will be able to take their paintball markers into Australia again due to the relaxation of the very strict import laws that they have had over there. Australian import laws have historically prevented pretty much all paintball marker technology from being taken into Australia, and is one of the reasons for the collapse of the APPL over there. Now that overseas players can bring their own gear, it is possible that Australia will start seeing a resurgence in the growth of paintball as a serious competitive sport. Palmerston PB Field Flood 25 Feb 2004 ![]() Sure enough, at least one paintball field got caught up in the bad weather experienced in the bottom part of the North Island earlier in Feb. Platoon Paintball in Palmerston North, operated by Phil Jurgens, has had to temporarily close up due to the flooding. The barricades used left some dead patches, but ground staff had been scheduled to start renovation work on the field anyway and those patches would be returfed and reseeded as required.
